First off, you have to read the full translation of this book. I read the abridged version of Three Kingdoms translated by Moss Roberts first and thought it was pretty good, but felt that the story wasn't developed enough and lacked cohesion. Moss Roberts translation, "Three Kingdoms"m is the one you want, unabridged if you can get it. It includes a bunch of awesome (optional) footnotes with historical context and several notes about where the book deviates substantially from history (e.g. things that Sun Jian and his followers did that were attributed to Liu Bei's men in RTK).
